October 21st 2008 – 7 to 9pm @ thisisnotashop – Ghost Stories
Facilitators: Jessica Foley & Jessamyn Fiore
This week the group are invited to bring along a stimulus that might incite ghostly, spectral or otherworldly responses, be it personal writing, found images or texts, music, objects, etc. From these stimuli participants will develop a series of responses of whatever form seems appropriate. (There will be speakers & laptop facilities for audio visual stimuli, should these be required.)

[MUSIC WORKSHOP]
This workshop is about responding to music, or simply having music in
the background as we write. The idea behind this workshop came from
the realisation that a lot of us use music as an inspiration or as a
rhythmic background to writing. At the same time, although writing can
follow music, music often entirely change the tone and emotion
surrounding a piece of writing. Each participant should bring along a piece of music or song (on an
mp3 or CD or cassette) and any connecting cables or material they
might need to plug it into a laptop or stereo. This can be any
song/piece – a song that has significant meaning or reminds you of a
particular time, a radio song you hate, a classical piece, a piece of
found sound, something famous, something entirely not famous (feel
free to bring more than one, its a kind of desert island discs)There will be one piece playing in the kitchen area through speakers
for communal writing, and we will set up a couple of head phone
stations for more intimate writing;
one in the toilet and one in the front room. Participants can
recommend whether their piece should be done communally or through
headphones. We can write responses for a couple of minutes and
hopefully everyone can get to listen to and respond to each
piece/song.
In the second part of the workshop we can discuss the effects, what
was produced, how it worked or didn’t work, whether it was something
we could push further, etc.
Participants: Neasa Malone, Jessica Foley, Aine Ivers

September 23rd 2008, 7pm -9pm at thisisnotashop
Facilitator: Kay Inckle
The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is described as “a course in discovering and
recovering your creative self”. It provides a guided programme towards getting
the most of our creative potential through daily self-awareness practices
alongside specific techniques and exercises to stimulate the creative process.
In this session we will experiment with some of the exercises to energise our
writing process and to open up some new creative channels.

Wheels Beneath Toys
Writing Workshop 9th Sept. 7pm @ thisisnotashop.
Facilitator: Jessica Foley
This weeks workshop will engage with the exhibition Wheels Beneath Toys – writing exercises devised through interactions with the work on display will be the focus of the first part of the workshop. This will be an opportunity to use the visual & sculptural work installed in the gallery as a stimulus for writing & discussion. It should be an interesting experience, and one which hopefully everyone will be able to relate to & connect with. (There will be toys, games, colouring in & sound recordings involved!)
As always there will be time to share developing work & ideas.
Participants: Jessamyn Fiore, Jessica Foley, Susan Thompson, Kay Inckle.
The writing & colourings created during the workshop were on display in the window of thisisnotashop as part of Wheels Beneath Toys until the 20th Sept.

The Ditto Project: 26th August 7pm
CHANGE OF VENUE: Due to gallery construction this Workshop will be held at Frank Ryan’s Pub on Queen Street by corner of Benburb Street

Guest Facilitator: Bernardine Carroll.
A few words from our guest facilitator:
My name is Bernardine Carroll and I collaborate with graphic designer Dave Wrenne in running The Ditto Project. As part of the project we work with artists from various disciplines in creating instructions for the creation of art pieces. The instructions form the basis of research into ideas around autonomy of and access to art, and are usually created and presented in discussion based environments. Some of the instruction can be accessed on the blog thedittoproject.wordpress.com.

Political Writing
Members brought in a piece of “political writing”- the definition of which is up to personal interpretation. A great workshop filled with lively discussion about religion, conflict, the role of images in war, Middle Eastern history and historical antisemitism in Ireland. The writings generated are being sent to Wreckio Ensemble in NYC to be included in their Based On a True Story series this October.
Participants: Gerry McDonnell, Jessica Foley, Jessamyn Fiore, Kay Inckle, and Scott Kelly.

15th July 2008 7pm thisisnotashop
Established in July 2007, The Writing Workshop seeks to promote an open & experimental experience for those interested in Writing in the broadest sense, from the traditional to the less definable. The Workshop promotes a sharing of expertise, experience & talents with a view to opening up the possibility for collaborations and a kind of cross-pollenation of talents & techniques.
In Season Two, organisers Fiore & Foley, are drawing in guest speakers such as Wreckio Ensemble, The Ditto Project, and Screen Writer Paul O’Kelly. Participants will be invited to organise guest speakers & Workshop sessions, either individually or collaboratively, and in this way the Workshop will continue to be dynamic & shifting in its approach & perspective.
Particpants: Kay Inckle, Neasa Malone, Jessica Foley, Jessamyn Fiore.
